How to install a sump pump

These float-activated pumps push water out of your home. You place them in a small well, called a sump, usually at the lowest part of your basement floor. As water fills the sump, the float rises and causes the pump to work until the water level drops again. Submersible models can be placed in the sump itself.
Drain the sump to a dry well.
Safety
Sumps should be sealed to prevent radioactive radon gas entry. For more information on radon gas, contact the EPA Public Information Center, PM211B, 401 M ST. SW, Washington, DC 20460; EPA Radon Hotline: 800-SOS-RADON; your regional EPA office; or your state health department.
Pros’ Tip
It’s a bad idea to drain your sump pump into your sewer or septic system. It may overtax these systems and may also be illegal.
